Business Intelligence (BI) in K-12 Plano ISD John Alawneh john.alawneh@pisd.edu My talk today is bout PM in k-12 based on our own unique experience at Plano ISD But before I get into the details of how we implemented PM, I am going to spend a little time on the evolution that lead to today’s PM structure I want to share with you what in particular influenced our thinking and inspired our model I will then talk about the main components that we adapted in our implementation Then I will dive into our model and how we translated PM into an integrated platform for tracking and analyzing performance at all levels of the organization At the end of this presentation, I hope you will be inspired to follow suit and come up with your own effective model for Pm in your district
So what should we do with all this data….? For years we collected data, automated our systems and safe guarded our backups… we have so much data safely secured away and we need to unlock it and make it available timely to our decision makers in a way that help them make effective decisions … The challenges vary from organization to another and we will have better understanding of those challenges as we talk next about the the components of PM However, they are generally related to: Data integration and collection Infrastructure Leadership Culture Selecting the right vendor

The goal is to build real knowledge about the individual. So, in order to achieve that goal, we must translate data to meaningful information so we can know how we can improve the individual student learning. Data meaning knowledge

Without it you could not produce a PM environment. The operation data store houses your operation data and you run your operation reporting through it The DW houses your Enterprise data that stores consistent and standard data where higher level reporting can be performed such as OLAP and Dashboarding PM can then add additional components to provide effective PM
The Vision… The PISD vision is driven by 4 strategic objectives: Student learning Capacity development Knowledge based decision making Community connectedness Student learning is our focus at this phase of the project. The drivers for this strategic objective are: AEIS AYP College Readiness Drop out/Completion rate AEIS has 5 KPI’s representing it and so on for the rest of the drivers…. There 5 measures/metrics driving each KPI under AEIS The measures have actual values that drive the KPI… This process is used through careful research and analysis until all drivers, KPI’s and metrics are identified and the relationships that interconnects them are established. This work covers the vision portion of the alignment process covered earlier…remember the two areas of alignment for PM, the vision and architectural foundation

For example…this model was developed to show the teachers which students they can focus on to improve their class performance in TAKS scores that would also improve the schools rating… The principals use this as part of their Campus Improvement Plan to decide the % of student performance improvement over prior year they should target…the % of improvement is based on the adding the students between red and purple lines to last year’s number.
