Pumping Up By Cheryl Beckmann Jamestown Elementary

Pumping Up for Summer It is mid May. Summer is just around the corner and the Sports Illustrated swim suit issue has just hit the news stands. You go to the mirror and to your horror discover you have been watching to much television and munching chips. It is time to firm up and lose ten pounds of that winter insulation.

The Problem Rank these items in order of least helpful to most helpful as far as getting in shape.Use the key words that are underlined to place on the line.

Drink 8 8oz glasses of water a day LeastMost

Eat 4-6 small meals a day LeastMost

Do weight lifting or strengthening exercises LeastMost

Skipping meals or throwing up(bingeing) LeastMost

Walk every day LeastMost

Take diet pills LeastMost

Answer bingeing pills weight lifting 4-6 meals drink walk LeastMost

Scoring For each item find the difference between your ranking and the experts. Add these scores together The smaller the difference the closer you are to the experts.

Example ExampleYour rankingExpertsDifference Drink water Diet pills6 1 5 Added together 2+5=7 your score is 7

Experts Reasoning for the Ranking Pills-taking pills does speed up your metabolism, but it is a quick fix. There can be side effects. Pills are addictive. When you stop taking pills you gain the weight back.

Bingeing When a person skips meals the body shuts down and slows its digestive speed to conserve energy because the body thinks it is starving. Bingeing causes heart problems and the acid in your stomach starts eating at the stomach lining and teeth.

Weight Lifting Weight lifting is good. It will speed up the digestive process and burn calories. It will firm the body up. At first a person may gain weight because muscle weighs more than fat which is good in the long run.

Drinking Water By drinking more water the bodies system can eliminate excess fat and unused sugars cleansing the body system.

Eating 4-6 Meals By eating more often the body system constantly burns energy. This keeps the bodies waste moving.

Walking By walking or doing your favorite activity two to three times a week the body system speeds up, builds strong muscle, and burns more calories.
