Presentation transcript:

Why choose AP Statistics? My college major requires the course. I like lab classes where I can see the concepts. I like homework that is challenging and each problem is unique. I like problems that have “real world” applications. I love labs that involve FOOD.

Why choose AP Calculus? Environment is much different than larger college classes Easier to maintain a network of study partners Appearance on transcript sends many positive message to colleges Allows students to “jump” into more advanced math classes in college

Topics Covered in AP Statistics This course is a basic introduction in the concepts of descriptive and inferential statistics. There are four broad conceptual themes: (1) exploring data: observing patterns and departures from patterns, (2) planning a study: deciding what and how to measure, (3) anticipating patterns in advance: producing models using probability and simulation, (4) statistical inference: confirming models. Students will use statistics as a tool to solve a variety of problems in all area, including but not limited to political science, economics, sports, ecology, law, life and biological and physical sciences.

Topics Covered in AP Calculus Calculus is the mathematics of change Functions, Graphs, and Limits The concept of the Derivative Applications of derivatives and modeling rates of change The concept of Integration Approximating the area under a curve Evaluating differential equations

QUANTITY OF WORK: Summer Packet ONE –TWO HOURS of homework per block class 2-3 Test per quarter; 3-4 quizzes per chapter Chapter assignments (collected and graded) AP problems Required Practice for AP Calculus

QUALITY OF WORK: Excellent work ethic Integrity: I do my own work. I use the HW answers to check my work, not to copy so that I have something on paper for the teacher. Organization: I am aware of due dates and can always find my assignments Responsibility (“no-excuse” mentality): I don’t give up. I keep working until I understand a concept. I understand that I may need to do more than is assigned to grasp some concepts.

Motivation: I do HW to better understand the material, not just to get points. I don’t care if the teacher looks at it or not… Maturity, self-discipline: I do the majority of my work when assigned and don’t wait until the last minute. Time management: I understand that the AP test is a timed assessment and I will a set amount of time to complete class assignments Good Attendance is a must. I can’t learn if I am not in class.

SKILLS NECESSARY FOR SUCCESS: Algebra Skills Reading Comprehension Skills Analytical Skills Multitasking Skills Higher-level thinking skills Be able to make inferences from concepts Be intellectually curious Be able to recognize patterns Completed PreCalculus with a B or better or can be taken concurrently with Advanced Algebra/PreCalculus (AP Statistics).

AP Calculus or AP Statistics? Call the admission office at the college you wish to attend and ask them which they would rather see on your transcripts.
