What forms of exchange were used in the Virginia colony? Few people had paper money or coins. Barter was commonly used instead of money. Tobacco farmers could use their crop to pay for goods and services. People could also buy on credit and pay their debts when their crops were harvested and sold.

How was everyday life in colonial Virginia different for white Virginians, enslaved African Americans, and free African Americans?

Most white Virginians made their living from the land as small farmers Most white Virginians made their living from the land as small farmers. A few owned large plantations. Most enslaved African Americans worked in the tobacco fields and had no rights. Most free African American owned their own businesses and property but were denied most rights.

How did the colonists’ ideas about government differ from those of the British Parliament? Parliament believed it had the legal authority in the colonies and the right to tax the colonies. The colonists believed their local assemblies had legal authority and they should not be taxed by Parliament since they had no representation there.

Why was the Declaration of Independence important? The Declaration of Independence stated that the authority to govern belongs to the people and all people are created equal and have the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
