Job outlook Job Outlook About this sectionOpportunities should be excellent for qualified individuals in all branches of the Armed Forces. The United States spends a significant portion of its overall budget on national defense. The number of active-duty personnel is expected to remain roughly constant through However, the drawdown from recent conflicts may lead to a decrease in the number of active-duty personnel. This should be balanced by the need to fill entry-level positions as members of the Armed Forces move up through the ranks, leave the service, or retire. The current goal of the Armed Forces is to maintain a force sufficient to fight and win two major regional conflicts at the same time. Political events, however, could lead to a significant restructuring.

Duties of a soldier Duties The military distinguishes between enlisted and officer careers. Enlisted personnel make up about 83 percent of the Armed Forces and carry out the fundamental operations of the military. Officers make up the remaining 17 percent and are leaders of the military, supervising and managing activities in every occupational specialty in the military.
