Welcome to Humanities Today is Monday, January 13, 2014 and you will need: Notebook, folder, writing tool, personal reading material Please have your ½ sheet of notes out Today I am going to start tracking tardiness. At two, a warning occurs. At three and four, I contact your parents. At five, you receive a referral. Please take a permission slip for the Showcase Assembly Friday and return it tomorrow. You need passes now to move around campus during classes. Start up is a See – Think - Wonder

Background for See-Think-Wonder The publicity from his role in Free Willy led to an effort by Warner Brothers Studio to find Keiko a better home. Donations from the studio and a wealthy businessman led to the establishment of the Free Willy-Keiko Foundation in February With donations from the foundation and millions of school children, the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, Oregon spent over $7 million to construct facilities to return him to health with the hope of returning him to the wild. Keiko was moved to his new home on January 7, The plan to return him to the wild was a topic of much controversy. Some felt his years of captivity made such a return impossible. Researchers in a scientific study later said attempts to return him to the wild were misguided. Nevertheless, the process of preparing Keiko for the wild began on September 9, 1998, when he was flown to Iceland. His day-to-day care became the responsibility of the Free Willy-Keiko Foundation with management assistance from the Ocean Futures Society. He underwent training designed to prepare him for his eventual release, including supervised swims in the open ocean. Keiko was finally released in the open in July However, about six weeks later he showed up in a Norwegian fjord, apparently seeking contact with human beings and allowing children to ride on his back. He died there four months later.

SEE THINK WONDER

Daily Learning Target “I can explain my perspective on the whaling controversy” Progression of Learning “I can explain my ‘gut reaction’ to the whaling controversy” “I understand a variety of perspectives on the controversy” “I can explain why my ‘gut reaction’ has changed or strengthened”

“I can explain my ‘gut reaction’ to the whaling controversy” Totally oppose the Makah whale hunt Totally support the Makah whale hunt Write a short explanation of your gut reaction (2-4 sentences)

Graphic Organizer of Choice If you are going to listen to the perspectives of different people and know it would be beneficial to take notes to help you with a paper you will have to write, how would you set up your journal? A couple of people share your ideas please. Create a graphic organizer of your choice in which to collect notes as you listen to different people.

“I understand a variety of perspectives on the controversy” Block Party! Everyone will receive a quote from an editorial that was written about the whaling controversy Your job is to read and understand the quote well enough so that you can explain it to another student Procedure Read your quote to yourself Paraphrase it in your notebook Write a brief reaction Walk around the room forming pairs with other students (There are 13 quotes, so two people have the same quote) Read your quote Explain what you think it means Try to share with at least five other students When you return to your seat: Write some notes about perspectives you heard

“I can explain why my ‘gut reaction’ has changed or strengthened” Totally oppose the Makah whale hunt Totally support the Makah whale hunt Explain why your ‘gut reaction’ changed or strengthened (4-5 sentences)

Fist to Five “I can explain my perspective on the whaling controversy” Reflection Question/Exit Slip 1. Explain one thing you learned, realized, or thought about today in class Homework Consent form for Friday’s field trip to the MLK assembly needs to be back by Friday. ½ page of notes due today!

Notes This start up wasn’t the most generative in terms of student discussion, so Gavin added some background Didn’t have time to do another continuum stand up and talk at the end Some students had trouble with the block party, perhaps a graphic organizer would help?? Exit slips were good
