A Meeting of Minds

Do Now A Meeting of Minds Key Question: How do species change over time? Initial Thoughts:

Evidence: Cornell Notes Paste the guided questions into your notebook. 4 volunteers to read the parts of: Charles Darwin, 19 th century scientist Isabel Matos, science reporter Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, 19 th century scientist Wendy Chin, middle school student

Analysis Questions 1.A) compare and contrast Lamarck’s and Darwin’s theories of evolution. B) Why do scientists find Darwin’s theory more convincing? 2. Ancestors of modern elephants had much shorter trunks than they do today. Use Lamarck’s theory of evolution to explain how the trunks of elephants might get longer over many generations. Drawing a picture may help you to explain what you have learned.

Analysis Questions contd. 3.Use Darwin’s theory of natural selection to explain how the trunks of elephants might get longer over many generations. Drawing a picture may help you to explain what you have learned.

Summary What did you think about how species change over time before this lesson? What did you learn about how species change over time from this lesson? (Minimum of 3 sentences!!!) What are some further thoughts or questions you have about how species change over time?

Reflection Draw the outline of Lamarck’s Head and Darwin’s head. Inside, list the ideas each had about evolution. Jean Baptiste LamarckCharles Darwin
