Choosing Community Health Services Being health-literate means more than just being informed about products. You need to understand the options in health care services available in your community.

Lesson Objectives In this lesson, you’ll learn to: Identify situations requiring professional health services, such as primary and preventive care, for people of all ages. Identify, describe, and assess available health-related services in the community that relate to disease prevention and health promotion. Compare and analyze the cost, availability, and accessibility of health services for people of all ages.

Types of Health Services Health Care System Immunizations, health screenings, and health care professionals are all a part of the health care system. Whenever you’ve seen a doctor for a checkup or a dentist for an oral exam, you’ve used preventive care. Health care can be divided into: General care, which includes primary care physicians. Specialized care, which includes specialists.

Facilities for Health Care Services Health Care Facilities Communities may have more than one type of health care facility. These facilities may offer health care as inpatient care or outpatient care. Health care facilities include: Private practices. Clinics. Group practices. Hospitals. Emergency rooms. Urgent care centers.

How People Pay for Health Services Health Care Expenses Many families have some form of health insurance. To maintain membership in such a plan, the insured person pays a periodic premium, or fee, for medical coverage. In conventional insurance plans, the insured person pays for doctor visits out of pocket. The insurance company then reimburses a fixed portion of the cost of the visit. A deductible is an amount a member must pay in an out-of-pocket expense before the plan will start reimbursing for health care services.

While you are at the office, ask questions about any diagnoses, medications, or procedures that you do not understand or are unsure about. Inform the staff of your allergies and current medications.
