It’s Friday, Juniors October 26, 2012 Do Now: Please look back at your position statement Which side more clearly shows your opinion? Explain why this is so…

Create a thesis statement here…(do you best, it’s your first try!) How can we create a thesis statement that makes the reader think and expresses your viewpoint regarding the ban on alcohol on the reserveration?

How can we support our opinions with facts from the report? What concrete evidence/claims do we have?

Does your evidence use the logical appeal? ◦Explain how you have strong, clear claims: ◦How do you know your statements are valid: ◦Show your clear reasons for claims (supporting evidence of your facts (analysis)) ◦Types of evidence you are including: (facts, statistics, expert authority, observations, anecdotes)

Check through and make sure you’ve avoided ALL of these! Over-generalized claims Reasons that are not fully explained or supported Logical fallacies (untruths) Evidence misused or ignored No recognition of opposing views

Ethical Appeal-fair, open-minded, honest, and knowledgeable writer To do this effectively, you must be true to your voice! ◦Well-informed about the topic ◦Confident in your position ◦Sincere and honest ◦Understanding of the reader's concerns and possible objections ◦Humane and considerate

What to avoid in an ethical appeal… Unfair or dishonest view point Distorting or misrepresenting information (biased) Insulting or dismissive of other viewpoints Advocating intolerant idea

Emotional Appeal! emotional appeals target the emotions of the reader to create some kind of connection with the writer. How can you make an argument and keep it hidden? Think of ways of convincing that are “non-written”…

Emotional appeal reinforces the logical arguments with… Imagery to create a bond with the reader (show not tell!) Appeal to idealism, beauty, humor, nostalgia, or pity (or other emotions) in a balanced way? How can you make the reader feel the character’s struggle?

Give three examples of what you can use in your conclusion… The conclusion is a call to action-using your thesis statement and evidence you’ve presented, tell the reader what he must do! Make the reader want to put down your pages and rush off to help John or Abigail!

What last bit to make the reader think! We always leave the reader with something to think about..to ponder. What can you leave regarding the ban and alcoholism?

Go back to your thesis slide! Now that you’ve strengthened your argument, what can you add to your thesis statement to make it more bold?

Homework! Use your notes to create a first rough draft! Take the most time with your logical appeal. Think about your supporting evidence and how it relates to your thesis. Feel free to type or handwrite your first rough draft.
