Constraints of On-Demand Writing “Real World” Writing Two writing prompts (one with two choices; pick ONE) 40 minute stand-alone 90 minute passage-based prompt Use of Thesaurus is allowed Different writing formats are suggested 4-point rubric

On-Demand Writing is as easy as…

For each writing prompt, look for the… Situation Purpose Audience Mode

Situation is the event that causes you to write. Situation is labeled for you It’s always the first part of the prompt It’s a make believe situation that hasn’t really happened to you (pretend) It creates a need to write

Purpose is the reason you are writing. Respond to a text/graphic/chart (organize information by using main ideas and supporting details.) Persuade consider the needs/feelings of the audience as you solve problems and/or convince them. (Use main ideas and supporting details.) Narrate share what you saw, heard, smelled, tasted, touched, said, thought, did…

Audience is the person/group you are writing to. Look in the writing task for the audience; it might be an individual or a group Consider what the audience needs to know, wants to know, and already knows Imagine what questions they will have for you. Answer them in your writing.

Mode is the type of writing you will do. Look in the writing task for the mode, then follow the appropriate format: Feature Article (facts, interviews, times) Letter (a date, a greeting, a body, a closing, a signature) Speech (titles, leads, bodies, closings) Editorial (opinion, quotes, cited sources)

Identifying SPAM In the following writing prompt, try to correctly identify…

Situation?

Purpose?

Audience?

Mode?
