PERSUASIVE STRATEGIES

Pathos  The use of emotion to persuade  Could be anger, sympathy, fear, love, etc.  Example…  Advertisements for the ASPCA that use sad looking animals in cages to get you to donate money

Ethos  The trustworthiness of a speaker  Can be based on the speaker’s background  Speaker must build a relationship with the listener  Example…  You are more likely to believe me because I’m a teacher

Logos  The use of logic and facts to prove a point and persuade  Example…  You would use statistics to convince somebody that one football team is better than another
