LIFE AS WE KNEW IT By: Nina H.

Response - Summary The countdown was soon to be over. The entire universe had been waiting for the jaw- dropping historical event to happen. A meteor was shortly going to shoot across the sky. The crazy thing is that the meteor was in eye sight- no need for a telescope. In a small town, Miranda Evans and her family were waiting for the meteor. Everyone’s TV was turned on, and a celebration was soon to be celebrated. The event was almost like New Years Eve. Finally, the meteor was sighted. Camera’s were filming and everyone in town was extremely excited. But when the meteor hits the moon, the event took an unexpected turn. The moon dropped because of the change of gravitational force. Electricity was immediately gone. Around the globe, life threatening events were occurring. Tsunamis were washing out countries, and ash from volcanic eruptions blocked the sun, causing the temperature to drop. Food and water was running out. Five months after the life changing event, there are almost no people left- except for the Evan’s family. To find out more, read the book Life as We Knew It By Susan Pferrer.

Exploration For my exploration I chose to do a summary/comparison of a book that is similar to Life as We Knew it.

Ashfall Summary & Comparison Many people that visit Yellowstone National Park don’t realize that the boiling hot springs and spraying geysers are caused by an extremely large supervolcano; so large that the caldera can only be seen by plane or satellite. Scientists say that the volcanoe is overdue for an eruption. For Alex, being left alone for the weekend means having the freedom to play computer games and hanging out with friends. Then the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts, destroying Alex’s hometown with ash and violence. Throughout the tragic event, Alex must find the strength and skills to survive the terrifying disaster. Ashfall is very similar to Life as We Knew It in many ways. One reason that they are alike is that in both stories, there are volcanic eruptions that occur. Another reason is that Alex (from Ashfall) and Miranda (from Life as We Knew It) both have to find hope and strength to survive the tragic events that occur along the way.
