Warm Up (WtK) Discussion of Argument / Persuasive Writing (WtK on Handout)

PRONOUNS must always match the words they replace. For some writers, this rule poses problems with indefinite pronouns. Just remember that indefinite pronouns (words like anyone, everyone, someone, no one, nobody) are ALWAYS singular. For example, Everyone must bring his or her lunch to school. Write a paragraph describing the ideal student dress code. Use ALL of the indefinite pronouns listed above.

Who Knows the Rule? Who and whom are certainly confusingeven some experienced writers arent sure when to use which. Heres an easy way to figure it out: if you could replace the w-word with he, she, or they, use who or whoever. If you could replace the w-word with him, her, or them, use whom or whomever. Still confused? Simply rephrase the sentence so that you can choose between he and him. For example, if you have the sentence He is someone whom/who I consider a hero, rephrase the sentence: I consider him a hero. Because you used him, you know that whom is correct. Write the following sentences. Fill in the blanks with who or whom: 1. The person _____ hit my car should have to pay to fix the damages. 2. The people _____ have been standing in line the longest should get in first. 3. Give the tickets to _____ you like. 4. Give the movie tickets to _____ seems to want it most.

1. Does the subject agree with the verb? San Francisco, my favorite of all cities, have many beautiful bridges. 2. Peyton spent four days wandering around the woods trying to find his way back to the campsite. Did he loose or lose his way? 3. Eliminate excess words. The hikers they totally and completely panicked at the site of the bear they just saw along the trail. 4. What is the rhyme scheme in the following poem? Ive got a new replacement part Besides my kidney, lung, and heart. This set of teeth was almost free. (I paid ten thousand for the knee.) Its hard to tell if Im even me! 5. Write the possessive phrase to show a. The clues of one puzzle b. The clues of two puzzles

Warm Up O Correct the following sentence: Did you remember to write your research paper asked Mrs. thornwhimple. Oops cried brian.
