Samuel Collier Samuel is the main character, and he is the one telling the story. He is enemies with Richard at first, but then they become best friends. Captain Smith also fills Samuel’s head with a lot of information that he needs in the future.

Richard Richard is friends with James until the Indians attack and kill him. Then Samuel and him are best friends. When Richard leaves to go back to England with Captain Smith, they are both sad to separate from each other.

Captain Smith Captain Smith came to the New World as a commoner, and he teaches Samuel and Richard how to do a lot of useful stuff, like using swords and muskets. Later, he is the president of the Virginia colony, but is later forced back to England with Richard.
