Second year students have the opportunity to learn the behind the scenes operations of making a business successful. Students are preparing and producing meals and other bake goods sold in the on- campus restaurant and snack bar. Students can earn multiple certifications via the web based testing program that can be used after graduation.

Lesson Plans 11 th and 12 th grade Consumers Math Students will complete a project that will reinforcement the used of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. Students must bring in a family recipe. The recipe will be used for the students to work out the amount of ingredients needed to prepare this recipe for the entire class.

Lesson Plan Continued Throughout the project, students skills be assessed through quizzes and tests. At the end of this portion of the project, students will have a revised recipe with new amounts of ingredients that will be purchased to make the recipe for the class.

Lesson Plan Part 2 This lesson will incorporate the use of standard units of measurement Students will again be assessed throughout with quizzes and tests. At the end of this lesson, the students will have made the recipe that will be shared with everyone in the class.

Marketing Lesson Plan Students will work in small groups to create an advertising campaign. Students will be given a variety of venues to choose from and a budget. The campaign will include items such as coupons, radio commercials. This project will be presented to the class. A field trip will occur to a food supplier like Lipari Foods, to see the this in action.

The Connection Observing the two areas may appear at first to be completely unrelated. However, for students who may be interested in the food industry, we often forget that it takes more to run a restaurant then knowing how to prepare food. For students who are interested in the supplier side of the food industry, it can be extremely helpful to have experience working in the industry.

Where Do We Go From Here? Encourage students to look at various options with course contents – not just see view the traditional routes. Guide students when making course selections so that they can complete needed pre-requisites and core courses with passing grades. Encourage students to visit the Technical Campus.
