Virtualization saves us on hardware and labor. We also save on software licensing fees. And we can save money by creating and managing virtual test environments for some applications with our development group. - LukOil Oil Company

FEATURE OVERVIEW Comprehensive anywhere access for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Seamless, always-on, secure connectivity; no separate client software required Utilizes networking technologies already in Windows Server 2008 No separate action required to connect to corpnet while remote. Corpnet is simply there. Leverages policy-based network access Enables desktop management regardless of client location. Application and data access over WAN is slow in branch offices Slow connections hurt user productivity Improving network performance is expensive and difficult to implement Caches content downloaded from file and Web servers Users in the branch can quickly open files stored in the cache Frees up network bandwidth for other uses Branch Office Network Performance Make Users Productive Anywhere Using the BranchCache™ features in Windows Server® 2008 R2 and Windows 7, CCO has simplified remote connection to its network and speed the downloading of important files. It has cut costs by eliminating its virtual private network and has seen a 43 percent savings in wide area network (WAN) bandwidth. - Convergent Computing

LICENSING RULES: Every running instance of the server software may only run on an already licensed server. Every user or device that directly or indirectly accesses or uses instances of the Windows Server 2008 server software requires the purchase of a Windows Server 2008 Client Access License (Windows Server CAL). A Terminal Services 2008 CAL or a Remote Desktop Services CAL is required, in addition to a Windows Server 2008 CAL, to use the Remote Desktop functionality of the server software. An External Connector license can be acquired for external users’ access in lieu of individual CALs. CAL Requirement when using WS 2008 to host VMs When Windows Server 2008 is only running the Hyper-V role, the requirement to upgrade to WS 2008 CALs is not initiated. The CAL upgrade requirement will be initiated if any additional server roles are running on the Server. This change puts WS 2008 on a level playing field with the Windows Hyper-V server and other Hypervisors which are able to manage virtual machines without requiring a customer to upgrade to WS 2008 CALs Remote Desktop Services The latest version of the Terminal Services (TS) CAL is being renamed to Remote Desktop Services CAL. Both TS CAL and RDS CAL can be used for both WS2008 TS and WS2008 R2 RDS. Terminal Services is adding features to provide a centralized desktop delivery architecture that enables desktop environments to run and be managed on virtual machines within one centralized server. To reflect these broader capabilities, the Terminal Services role will be renamed to “Remote Desktop Services” (RDS). FoundationNew OEM only product targeting small businesses with less than 15 users and that purchase low priced servers with 1 processor (1P) The low cost 1P hardware market is growing rapidly for our OEM partners were not able to sell our traditional WS products to this segment of customers.

You may either run one instance of the server software in the physical OS environment (POSE) or one instance in a virtual OS environment (VOSE) When running both instances, the instance of the server software running in the POSE may only be used to manage and service the operating system environments on the server. You may move instances of the server software to a server that is already properly licensed to support such added instance(s). You may run one instance of the server software in the POSE and up to four instances of the server software in VOSEs. When running all five instances, the instance of the server software running in the POSE may only be used to manage and service the operating system environments on the server. You may move instances of the server software to a server that is already properly licensed to support such added instance(s). You may move as many virtual instances of Windows Server software to a server running Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter or Windows Server 2008 R2 for Itanium-Based Systems and not have to be concerned about the number of running virtual instances. For Volume License and FPP customers, the actual license may also be reassigned to another physical server every 90 days.  Single purpose Web server software  Only for deploying Web pages, Web applications, Web services, Web sites, and POP3 mail serving  Server license only; and no CALs required  Now allows any type of database on the server with no limit on the number of supported users  Must be front-end server and Internet- accessible  Targeted for specific workloads; line of business applications, custom applications, and scale-up database workloads  Same license terms as Datacenter  Same price as Datacenter Comparison By Server Role Server RoleEnterpriseDatacente r Standar d ItaniumWebFoundatio n Web Services (IIS)  Application Server    Print and Document Services    Hyper-V   Active Directory Domain Services    Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services    Active Directory Rights Management Services    DHCP Server    DNS Server    Fax Server    Windows Deployment Services    Active Directory Certificate Services 11  11 File Services 22  22 Network Policy and Access Services 33  55 Remote Desktop Services 44  66 Active Directory Federation Services   Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)     - Full  - Partial/Limited  - Not Available 1 – Limited to creating Certificate Authorities – no other ADFS features (NDES, Online Responder Service).
