Microsoft in de Telefonie? Larry Velez Director Industry Initiatives, Unified Communications Microsoft The future is near

Microsoft Unified Communications created by the “magic of software” Instant Messaging Application Integration Team Workspaces Across Networks Across Devices / Calendaring Conferencing VoIP More Productivity Lower Cost More Choice More Innovation Telephony

Transforming Business Models Vertically-integrated communications Horizontal software-driven communications Vendor Specific Multiple Vendors

Using the Public Internet For Communications Microsoft introduces Edge Server technology for secure and scalable Audio, Video, and Web communication No need for IPSEC

Secure & Scalable VoIP “how it works” Private Enterprise Network Public Network RemoteUser 1. Remote user SIP session request is authenticated DMZInternalUser A/V Edge Server HTTP reverse proxy (ISA Server) Private Enterprise Network Public Network RemoteUser 2. Remote user requests VoIP to be authenticated at a public IP address DMZ A/V Edge Server Private Enterprise Network Public NetworkRemoteUser 3. External user is given a port (UDP) to communicate DMZ A/V Edge Server Private Enterprise Network Public NetworkRemoteUser 4. Remote User (SIP) invites Internal User to talk. DMZ InternalUser A/V Edge Server HTTP reverse proxy (ISA Server) Private Enterprise Network Public Network ExternalUser 5. Internal user requests VoIP to be authenticated via a private IP address DMZ InternalUser A/V Edge Server Private Enterprise Network Public Network RemoteUser 6. Internal User accepts Remote User invitation to talk. DMZInternalUser A/V Edge Server HTTP reverse proxy (ISA Server) Private Enterprise Network Public NetworkRemoteUser 7. Internal User gets a public port to talk with Remote User. DMZ InternalUser A/V Edge Server Private Enterprise Network Public NetworkRemoteUser 8. Internal User and Remote User are now talking. DMZ InternalUser A/V Edge Server

Why is this important? Remote users must have a valid security certificate can be authenticated by the HTTP Reverse Proxy Server Remote users must know the public IP address of the A/V Edge server to connect to a public UDP port Remote users are given a different public UDP port when authenticated Internal or External Users have the right to accept or reject the request without risk When the conversation is finished, all ports are closed Security risks are very low because of the dynamic nature of establishing a communication session 6
