CHAPTER ONE YOUR NJ DRIVER LICENSE

Why Do You Need Driver’s Ed Drivers Ed is usually required to get a driver’s license for the first time Driver education courses can teach safety tips for new drivers Drivers ed courses can sometimes help to decrease insurance premiums

Drivers Ed courses increase the awareness of driver’s everywhere Driver’s ed will improve a driver’s confidence Driver’s education can help drivers overcome their fear of driving

I. Your NJ Driver License A. Things to have on you when driving: 1. Drivers License 2. Proof of Insurance 3. Registration Card B. Change of address: 1. Report new address within 1 week.

C. Name Change: 1. Report to DMV within 2 weeks. D. Out- of- state license: 1. Apply for a NJ license within 60 days. 2. Must take written & vision test.

II. Proofs of Age and Identity: A. Original Birth certificate or certified copy. 1. Can not be a photo copy. 2. Can not be a certificate from hospital. B. Valid U.S. alien registration card combined with a Social Security card.

6 Point ID Verification Program  Used to verify: Age Identification Address SSN # Immigration Status ( if applicable

6 Pt. ID Program cont….  Purpose: to prevent fraudulent documents from becoming official documents

Acceptable Documents  4 point documents – Primary docs Birth certificate Adoption papers US Passport Current or expired digital driver license Valid non digital driver license Active Military photo ID Certificate of citizenship

Acceptable Documents  3 Point documents – secondary docs Marriage certificate or divorce decree Legal name change court order Current US military dependent card US military photo retiree card

Acceptable Documents  2 point documents – secondary docs Valid US gov’t employee driver license Valid US gov’t employee photo ID card US military discharge papers (DD214) Pilot license US school photo ID card along with transcripts US college photo ID along with transcripts

Acceptable Documents  1 point documents – secondary docs Social security card HS diploma or GED ATM card/ Bank Statement Health insurance card Current photo license from another state Bill from a NJ municipality

Proof of Address  Utility or credit card bill showing name and current address w/in the last 90 days  Checking or savings account statement w/in 60 days  Parent/guardian certification that verifies that you are living w/ them  A property tax bill/statement w/in the last year

III. Types of NJ licenses: A. Class D – Basic Automobile B. Class A, B, & C – CDL C. Class E – Motorcycle D. Class F - Moped E. Class G - Farm

IV. License cycle: A. NJ license is good for 4 years. 2 years for motorists at least 70 years old. B. Digital photos safety reason C. Under 21 differs in physical appearance V. Restrictions will appear on your license A. Glasses or Contact lenses

Graduated Driver License 1. Introduces driving privileges gradually for:  First time drivers  Drivers under 21  Drivers who are 17 an have passed the knowledge and vision test

GDL  Student Permit Driving Restrictions 1. Drive between 5:00am-11:00pm 2. No wireless devices 3. Accompanied by a driver who is 21 and has had a license for 3 years 4. License plate must have a red reflector sticker

 Examination Permit 1. At least 17 years old (unless you are in enrolled in a driving school)  Provisional Driver License Restrictions 1. Drive between 5:00 am to 11:00 2. Only one passenger 1. Parent present you can have more 3. No wireless devices 4. All occupants must wear seat

Adult Road  Must be at least 21 years old  Permit for 3 months  No wireless devices  Provisional license for 1year  Get a basic driver license
