Writer’s Workshop Grade 8 Collecting II OBJ: To look at an authors use of a variety of methods to collect information for their memoir in order to paint their scenes when writing in different modes. CCCS: W.8.3, W.8.4, W.8.5, W.8.10, SL8.1

You( e.g. Jamal) describe yourself: height, weight, facial features, body type, etc. List 4 traits: witty, reckless, wicked sense of humor, ill tempered We waited in line for hours but my friend couldn’t get on the ride due to height restrictions so we had to try another ride (portrayed through use of dialogue). OR Running through a park (picture) photographs, interviews His face suddenly turned red as a beet and I could see he was about to exploded. Mode: Graphic Novel

Purpose To provide your reader on how you will portray your character(s) through the mode of text you have chosen for your memoir. Examples: Pictures and Text (Graphic Novel) Stage Direction (Screenplay)

Your turn… Label in your notebook using a full page: Setting a Scene. Imagine the scene. Draw, or free write List all the things that come to your mind when you think of the setting Afterwards circle the most important aspects that you want the reader to understand. Example(s): specific time, actual date, or location that is important to the plot Share your memory with your partner and ask for their feedback about the setting On next page fold in half. Label one side “Setting Details” the other “How I will portray this.” Write down the important aspects of the setting and think of how you can best portray these in your mode of writing. Review the mode’s mentor text to see how the pros did it Share yours with your partner and get feedback

Use this method of creating sense to map out your ideas ahead of time in order to develop a clear setting that will engage your readers. By now these worksheets should be completed in its entirety: “Memoir Litmus Test” worksheet (Selecting I) for a memory. “Choosing a Mode for your Memoir” worksheet (Selecting II) how you will write your memoir. “Cast of Characters” worksheet (Collecting I) on how you will portray yourself and other characters in your memoir.
