ArcGIS Server Architecture at the DNR GIS/LIS Conference, October 2013

DNR Background 500+ GIS Users Use Examples

ArcGIS Architecture Examples Single Machine Site

ArcGIS Architecture Examples Single GIS Server Site

ArcGIS Architecture Examples Multiple Machine Site

ArcGIS Architecture Examples Multiple Machine Site ◦ Clustering

ArcGIS Architecture Examples Multiple Web Servers

Architecture Model

Blade Server Located on our internal SAN (Storage Area Network) Dell Dual Quad Core Processors (8 logical CPUs) 98 GB of Memory Provides processing powerVMs

Web Server What is it?

Web Server - Specs Model – Vmware Virtual Platform OS - Server 2008 R2 Standard Type – x64 Processor - Dual Intel Xeon E5520 ◦ 2.27GHz, 2 Cores, 2 Logical Processors RAM – 4 GB HD – 120 GB

GIS Server What is it?

GIS Server - Specs Model – Vmware Virtual Platform OS - Server 2008 R2 Standard Type – x64 Processor - Dual Intel Xeon E5520 ◦ 2.27GHz, 2 Cores, 2 Logical Processors RAM – 8 GB HD – C:\ 120GB, D:\ 512GB Clustering

GIS Server - Clustering Combining processing power of multiple machines Isolating services

Data Servers - File GDRS Windows vs Linux ◦ Lock Files with Windows – updating files difficult ◦ Linux much better Future all Windows Servers? UNC Path vs Drive

Data Servers Model – Vmware Virtual Platform OS - Server 2008 R2 Standard Type – x64 Processor - Dual Intel Xeon E5520 ◦ 2.27GHz ◦ 2 Cores ◦ 2 Logical Processors RAM – 4 GB HD – C:\ 120GB, D:\ 1TB

Data Servers - SDE Multiple versions 9.3 – 10.1

Cache Builder Windows 7 PC Copy Cache to Data Server Model – Vmware Virtual Platform OS – Windows 7 Type – x64 Processor – Intel Core i ◦ 3.10 GHz RAM – 8 GB HD – C:\ 250GB, D:\ 1TB

Test Server

Others Land Records

Permissions User Group of 15 people ◦ Read/Write access to the Test servers Admin Group of 2 ◦ Publish Apps and Services to Production  Oversight on service data and performance  Turnaround time ….

Web Applications ArcGIS Server web apps ◦ Flex Viewer, Javascript ◦ Examples – WHAF, Jay Cooke app Other Web Apps ◦ Ruby on Rails ◦ Services  ArcGIS Server  UofM Map Server

ArcGIS Online

Houses Online Maps and Applications (intranet and internet) Supported by DNR ArcGIS Server infrastructure. Currently stores several light applications, both internal and external, and some web maps. Looking to build on successes Will serve as a good resource for staff looking to publish dynamic web maps and apps who don’t require more robust custom applications built Looking to train a group of publishers (representatives from each division). ◦ Currently not enough staff knowledgeable in the DNR ArcGIS Server design. Site is part of State and ESRI Enterprise License Agreement. Overseen by MNGEO who distributes credits for usage based on ELA contribution
