WHAT IS ISO 14000? The ISO 14000 is a family of internationally recognized standards for environmental management systems that is applicable to any business or organization, regardless of size, location or income. These standards are developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

CONT…… The ISO 14000 environmental management standards exist to help organizations minimize how their operations negatively affect the environment. The ISO 14000 family addresses "Environmental management". This means what the organization does to: minimize harmful effects on the environment caused by its activities, and to achieve continual improvement of its environmental performance.

MAIN OBJECTIVE The major objective of the ISO 14000 series of norms is "to promote more effective and efficient environmental management in organizations and to provide useful and usable tools , ones that are cost effective, system-based, flexible and reflect the best organizations and the best organizational practices available for gathering, interpreting and communicating environmentally relevant information"

ISO 14000 essentials The ISO 14000 family addresses various aspects of environmental management. The very first two standards, ISO 14001:2004 and ISO 14004:2004 deal with environmental management systems (EMS). ISO 14001:2004 provides the requirements for an EMS and ISO 14004:2004 gives general EMS guidelines.

The EMS standards ISO 14004:2004 provides guidelines on the elements of an environmental management system and its implementation, and discusses principal issues involved. ISO 14001:2004 specifies the requirements for such an environmental management system. Fulfilling these requirements demands objective evidence which can be audited to demonstrate that the environmental management system is operating effectively in conformity to the standard.

The ISO 14000 family ISO 14001 is the standard that gives the requirements for an environmental management system. ISO 14001:2004 is the latest, improved version. It is the only standard in the ISO 14000 family that can be used for certification. The ISO 14000 family includes 21 other standards that can help an organization specific aspects such as auditing, environmental labelling, life cycle analysis.

ISO 19011 which specifies one audit protocol for both 14000 and 9000 series standards together. This replaces ISO 14011 meta-evaluation—how to tell if your intended regulatory tools worked. 19011 is now the only recommended way to determine this.

The ISO Survey The worldwide total of ISO 14001 certificates at the end of 2005 was 111 162. This was an increase of 24 % over 2004 when the total was 89 937. Certificates had been issued in 138 countries compared to 127 the year before.
