By Sara Masi 1 st Period

Was born as Eric Arthur Blair, then later changed his name to George Orwell. His first words according to many biographies, was “beastly”. He was a very sick child growing up, often battling bronchitis and the flu. At age 11, he has his first success in literature, his poem was published in a local newspaper. To support him and his wife, he took on writing many reviews and articles for many businesses and people. He is best known for two novels he had written, Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty- Four, which were published towards the end of his life.

I believe the theme to this story is that you can’t change who you are just because someone doesn’t except you for what you were born to be. It does not matter how far you will go just to have some attention, in the end you will still be the same person you were born to be. Never change who you meant to be for people who never appreciated you before you changed.

A British police officer who hated by everyone around this small town he lives in decides he is no longer going to be hated. A wild elephant is on the loose, so therefore he plans to kill the elephant. At first he is reluctant to kill the elephant, but he see his one and only chance to do it. He commits to killing the Elephant.

Narrator- English man serving as a police officer in Burma. Another officer who calls about the loose elephant. Man who was killed by the Elephant. Narrators Friend who gave him the gun to shoot the elephant. Towns People.

A dangerous elephant is on the loose throughout the town and no one will kill it so it does not harm anybody or anything. So, a town officer is now in charge of killing this elephant for everyone's safety, but he is not just doing it for their safety, but his popularity.

To the elephant issue, the officer finally shoots the elephant and killed it. To the second issue, he now saved everyone from being harmed and the town from being destroyed. Finally for the third issue, the officer is now a hero to everyone and he is now happier with him self. So in the end everything turned out how they expected it to, except for the owner of the elephant.

“But I did not want to shoot the elephant. I watched him beating his bunch of grass against his knees, with that preoccupied grandmotherly air that elephants have. It seemed to me that it would be murder to shoot him…” I like this passage because it was heart touching and it just proves how much he actually took to look at the elephant and realize what he had to do. Although, I dislike this passage because it is upsetting that he actually sat there for a few minutes and said how he would have to commit murder for this animal to stop.

Would you ever be able to put down any kind of animal just for a little bit of popularity? How would you feel if that was your animal? How would you feel if you were hated by the whole town?

I find it interesting that this man would actually sit there and feel upset about killing the animal before he actually did, then he actually does it to make the town like him. I feel as if he could have done something else to make him feel more like around town, instead of killing an wild animal. For instance, he could have trapped the animal with help from others and bring it somewhere, where it could not harm anyone or anything.
