Mrs. Shumate Title I Reading

All About Me I have been a teacher for nine years. I have taught 6 th grade, 1 st grade, 2 nd grade and multi- aged. I have my Reading Endorsement from Muskingum College. I love to teach. This is my dream job.

My Family I have a large family, one husband and SIX children!

What is Title I ?

Title I Reading Title I Reading is a federally funded program provided to those children who show a need for additional reading instruction.

How did my child get selected? Your child was selected from two or more academically related assessments. We take those test results and form a priority list based on their scores and classroom teacher recommendation.

What can I do to help my child? Read. Read to your child. Talk about books. Make reading a positive experience. Listen. Teach strategies. Reread familiar books. Praise every milestone!

Reading Strategies -You don’t have to be a teacher to teach your child how to read! Look at the pictures and look for clues. Think about the story. Go back and reread. Skip the word, read on, then return. Take a risk and make a guess.

When I Read……. Decoding Strategies Get your mouth ready for first sound. Look for chunks you know. Can you find a small word in a big word? Think about what makes sense. TRY!

How will Title I help my child be a successful reader?

Reading Think-Alouds Strategies good readers use before, during, and after they read. Using Prior Knowledge and Visualizing Monitoring and Clarifying Finding Connections and Applications Summarizing
