B ACKGROUND Around 1988, Osama bin Laden created the network Al Qaeda(Arabic for “the base”). Al Qaeda trained, transported, recruited, and financed thousands of fighters from many countries to defeat the Soviet Union and be part of the resistance. Attacks began when terrorists hijacked four airplanes and flew two into the world trade centers in New York City and one into the pentagon.

I SSUES Terrorist attacks have included: 9/11, car bomb attacks, fuel tanker explosions, coal bombings, bombings of U.S. embassies and more. Al Qaeda’s main goal is to kill U.S. citizens or military and our allies everywhere.
