Science Fair List of Materials & Procedure 8 th Grade Science Brookville Intermediate

List of Materials & Procedure   Recipe for conducting the experiment.   Consists of a list of materials/equipment followed by step-by-step instructions.   Must be specific enough to allow the experiment to be repeated exactly the same way each time it is conducted.   Specify what type data should be collected during the experiment in order to measure the response of the dependent variable.

List of Materials   Should be listed before the steps of the procedure.   Be specific about the exact name for materials/equipment and the size or capacity of the pieces of equipment to be used.   Include the number of each item that is to be used.

List of Materials  Bulleted list  All materials needed for experiment   List the measuring devices to be used to obtain the data.   Materials are often listed in a multiple column format.

Procedure  Numbered step-by-step instructions in logical sequence   Detailed enough to allow the experiment to be repeated exactly the same way each time it is conducted.   Define controls and constants

Procedure   It is appropriate to include diagrams to show the experimental set-up.   Explain how you gather data and how often  Describes the repeated trials

Guiding Questions 1. Are all materials and equipment listed? 2. Does the procedure include all important steps listed in order? 3. Have you included repetitions for repeated trials?

Guiding Questions 4. Have you included all important numbers, brand names, and sizes of required equipment both in the list of materials and in the steps of the procedure? 5. Is your procedure written in an appropriate format? 6. Is your sentence structure as well as your spelling and grammar correct?

Let’s Practice  Smithers thinks that a special juice will increase the productivity of workers. He creates two groups of 50 workers each and assigns each group the same task (in this case, they're supposed to staple a set of papers). Group A is given the special juice to drink while they work. Group B is not given the special juice. After an hour, Smithers counts how many stacks of papers each group has made. Group A made 1,587 stacks, Group B made 2,113 stacks.

List of Material  100 people  4000 papers to staple  50 staplers with staples  50 cups (8 oz.)  400 ounces of Special Juice  Clock or stopwatch Procedure 1.Create two groups of 50 people and put them in separate rooms. 2.Explain how to staple the papers to each group. 3.Ask Group A to drink the Special Juice and begin stapling. Stop them after one hour. 4.Ask Group B to begin stapling. Stop them after one hour. 5.Record how many stacks each group stapled.

Let’s Practice  Homer notices that his shower is covered in a strange green slime. His friend Barney tells him that coconut juice will get rid of the green slime. Homer decides to check this this out by spraying half of the shower with coconut juice. He sprays the other half of the shower with water. After 3 days of "treatment" there is no change in the appearance of the green slime on either side of the shower.

List of Materials  Spray bottle with 32 oz of coconut juice  Spray bottle with 32 oz of water  Shower with Green Slime  Camera  Clock Procedure 1.Run a piece of tape through the middle of the shower. 2.Take several pictures of the shower. 3.Spray one half with the 32 oz of coconut juice and the other half with 32 oz of water. 4.After three days take pictures of the shower. 5.Compare the before and after pictures to gather data.
