Samuel de Champlain Born in Brouage, France. Champlain sailed for the country France He made 21 voyages 1.) to trade fur 2.) to find new land for France. Champlain explored much of North America and Canada.

Accomplishments In 1604, Champlain sailed back to Canada on Pierre de Mont’s expedition , Champlain sailed and charted most of the coast of the Nova Scotia. Champlain founded Quebec City on July 3 rd, He also discovered the lake that was named for him, Lake Champlain, in He extended French influence to the Great Lakes basin.

Champlain’s journal describing his arrival to Quebec “From the island of Orleans to Quebec is one league, and I arrived there on July the third [ 1608 ]. On arrival I looked for a place suitable for our settlement, but I could not find any more suitable or better situated than the point of Quebec, so called by the natives, which was covered with nut-trees. I at once employed a part of our workmen in cutting them down to make a site for our settlement, another part in sawing planks, another in dig”

Effects Champlain has credit for establishing the first permanent settlement in Canada. War eventually broke out between England and France over the new found land. After the discovery of New France, the trading of fur flourished. He died of a stroke on December 25, 1635.
