Transitions-The Importance of Critical Thinking Carolyn McCune RN, MSN,CRNP

Critical Thinking A critical thinker is the hallmark of being an educated person Need to have these skills so you won’t harm a patient Examples:

What is Critical Thinking (Thorough Thinking) Think beyond what is said or shown Consider options related to information received Evaluate and make decisions based on multiple sources of information Knowing the facts and being able to apply them accurately

Do’s and Don’ts Do: look at all possible options Consider at least 3 alternative or possible solutions Be able to say “ I don’t know” Determine the most effective solution to a problem by asking others, reviewing the literature and thinking about it

Don’t: Use your gut reaction to a solution Unquestioningly follow the rules Respond to the pressures of our fast paced society for a quick decision

Ways to be a Critical Thinker Brainstorming: Focus and let go: Cultivate creativity: Idea files: Refine ideas and follow through: Don’t accept information without thinking about it

“I don’t know” Practice tolerance-don’t be easily swayed Understand before criticizing What pushes your button Consider the source Ask questions Look for at least 3 answers Be willing to change your mind

Questions??? All information from this lecture is from Anderson(2009), chapter 6.
