Brandon Decker Cynthia Gobrogge Revere High School, Richfield, OH Catch Up with SketchUp Brandon Decker Cynthia Gobrogge Revere High School, Richfield, OH

Who are we? Brandon Decker—High school science teacher What technology have I used in the classroom How it was used and how has it helped? Cynthia Gobrogge—Library Media Specialist, former HS English Teacher Teacher/LMS technology collaborations

Google Resources What is SketchUp? What are Google Docs (Revere Apps)?

SketchUp—Getting Started Download program http://sketchup.google.com/download/ Watch and review tutorials Work within program to familiarize yourself with basic features http://www.sketchup.com/training/videos.html

SketchUp—Download Two Options 1. Download SketchUp (free) Recommended Students can also download at home 2. Download SketchUp Pro (“extremely affordable” for students and schools) License required after free trial period Revere received E-tech grant for Pro license

Google Docs Accounts Tech department set up school domain: Revere Apps Students activate their accounts Teacher/LMS demonstrate Google Docs features Google Docs issues with uploads—main emphasis is collaboration Use email to attach Domain overcomes outside email issues Freatures—collaboration, online chats, tracks changes, domain email only

Forensics Project Steps Downloaded the program Searched internet for videos Followed along with videos while working in SketchUp Used one of the videos to demonstrate features of SketchUp Students worked along with video, pause and monitor students progress along the way (VIDEO) Student created SketchUps and collaboration on google docs.

Obstacles Encountered Licensing. Couldn’t access SketchUp Pro. Working in 3D space can be challenging Some user issues we couldn’t immediately correct *Be flexible—Let students know you don’t expect their SketchUp designs to be perfect. I would write down issues as students encountered them and try to figure out how to remedy these issues on my own and have an answer by the end of the period or the next class meeting

Lesson Ideas—SketchUp Language Arts Constructing the Globe Theatre Set construction of scenes for plays such as Death of a Salesman, The Crucible, etc. Arial views of settings for town in To Kill a Mockingbird (fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama) Social Studies Constructing digital historical buildings and museums Recreating any locale from a historical perspective

Lesson Ideas—SketchUp Science Cells – Prokaryote and eukaryote Anatomy – Examine organs in 3d Atoms – Atomic structure of molecules Math Geometry- Teaching with 3d shapes Surface area volume

Lesson Ideas—Google Docs All Subject Areas Group projects—PPTs, papers, online interaction Peer editing Storing in the cloud and gmail—allows students to easily work at school and home Students can communicate with teacher via email or chat

Common Core Standards Fulfills several Common Core Standards: College and Career Readiness (CCR) Anchor Standards for Speaking and Listening Comprehension and Collaboration CCR Anchor Standards for Language Academic and Content Vocabulary Writing Standards for Literacy in Science

Common Core Standards Students Who are College and Career Ready... use technology and digital media strategically and capably are familiar with strengths and limitations of various technological tools can use [tech. tools] best suited to their communication goals Students Who are College and Career Ready in Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening, and Language They use technology and digital media strategically and capably. Students employ technology thoughtfully to enhance their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language use. They tailor their searches online to acquire useful information efficiently, and they integrate what they learn using technology with what they learn offline. They are familiar with the strengths and limitations of various technological tools and mediums and can select and use those best suited to their communication goals (Intro, pg. 7).

Common Core Standards: Flexible Communication and Collaboration Students must learn to: work together express and listen carefully to ideas integrate info from oral, visual, quantitative, and media sources evaluate what they hear use media and visual displays strategically to help achieve communicative purposes adapt speech to context & task Key Features of the Standards Speaking and Listening: Flexible communication and collaboration Including but not limited to skills necessary for formal presentations, the Speaking and Listening standards require students to develop a range of broadly useful oral communication and interpersonal skills. Students must learn to work together, express and listen carefully to ideas, integrate information from oral, visual, quantitative, and media sources, evaluate what they hear, use media and visual displays strategically to help achieve communicative purposes, and adapt speech to context and task (Intro, p. 8).
