Lesson 6 Bellringer 1. What college would you like to attend if you could go anywhere you wish? 2. What do you want to get a degree in? 3. What options does a person who does not plan on going to college have? Technical school Community college Trade school

High Five for Healthy Hands Use page 57 to create a health goal for your self that we will discuss weekly in class. You will earn a star sticker each week the you have made progress on your goal. Trace your hand on the paper. Write your first and last name and your goal on your hand and cut it out to hang on the wall.

Lesson 6 Setting Health Goals and Making Responsible Decisions How can you set a health goal? 1. write a goal 2. make an action plan 3. identify obstacles 4. set up a timeline 5. keep a chart or diary to measure progress 6. build a support system 7. revise your plan or timeline as needed 8. reward yourself for accomplishing your goal

What is Healthy People 2010? National Health Goals What are the main goals? 1. Increase life expectancy 2. Eliminate health disparities in the population

How will we know if we met our goals? By looking at indicators What are the indicators? Physical activity Overweight, obesity Tobacco use Substance abuse Responsible sexual behavior Mental health Injury and violence Environmental quality Immunization Access to health care

What style of decision-making is the best? Proactive, why? Person identifies and evaluates possible decisions, makes a decision, and takes responsibility for the outcome Not driven by circumstances and conditions Not easily influenced by peers Have principles; integrity, honesty, dignity Empowered Have control over decisions and behavior

How can you make a responsible decision? 1. describe the situation 2. list possible decisions 3. ask for input form an adult 4. evaluate the consequences of the decision Will this promote health? Will it protect safety? Will it follow laws? Will it show respect for others? Will it follow parent rules? Will it show good character? 5. make a decision 6. follow through and evaluate the results

What if I make a wrong decision? 1. Take responsibility 2. stop the action 3. discuss the wrong decision with an adult 4. Make restitution (what is restitution?) Making up for any loss, damage, or harm you have caused- give an example Pay money, replace item, volunteer to make things right
