The Option Blocks and the Straw Poll How the Sixth Form Timetable is constructed: Subjects are placed in 5 Option Blocks. All subjects within a block are taught simultaneously and this means that you must ultimately choose one subject from each of the blocks (leaving one Block spare). To increase the choice of subject combinations, some subjects will appear in two or more Blocks. The Option Blocks for September 2012 will be driven by your wishes and will only be available for non-RLS students on our website once you have applied and courses allocated. The Blocks will be available in early December in time for the Open Evening on Tuesday 6 th December.

Choosing Your Course You will need to select four AS level subjects and to have some idea which three of these you are likely to continue with in your second year. (There will be extension courses for the most able students: more information on this will come later in the year) think ahead to university course selection. You may also need to be aware that certain degree courses require certain subjects at A level, whilst others do not: E.g., Architecture courses require Art A2; Psychology often requires Biology. With regard to Law and/or Psychology courses, for example, universities do not require any previous study of either subject. In order to help you decide on your final choice of subjects there is a section at the back of the brochure where you can find likely combinations of subjects needed for various degree courses/ careers. AND there is a downloadable pdf Guide to A levels for Uni Courses published by The Russell Group on the website.

Subjects likely to be on offer for Sept 2012 Fine Art Music Theatre Studies Biology Human Biology ChemistryPhysics Maths Statistics Maths Mechanics Further Mathematics Business Studies Economics Physical Education History Government and Politics Religious Studies (Philosophy + Ethics) GeographyGermanFrenchSpanishPsychologyEnglishMedia Design and Technology

What do you need to get in? You must have a strong performance at GCSE with good grades in the subjects you wish to study at A level. Entry is not automatic: you need a minimum of 368 points from 8 full GCSEs including Maths and English at A*-C (where A* = 58, A = 52, B = 46 and C = 40). For information, this is equivalent to 8 Bs. GCSE minimum levels in four AS level subjects of study (see prospectus) Recommendation from your present school The course required is on offer.

The End, for now…… All good wishes for success in your GCSE exams! from the Key Stage 5 Team: Mrs Baldock (Deputy Head i/c Sixth Form) Mrs Baines (Director of Learning Sixth Form) Mr Leyland (Head of Year 12) PS You can also download this power point from the website!
