Shakespeare’s Plays By: Lisa Kim

Introduction Shakespeare’s plays could be divided into three parts: Comedies, Tragedies, and Histories.

Comedies As You Like It, The Merchant of Venice, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Much Ado about Nothing, and Taming of the Shrew These plays have happy endings (i.e. Antonio does not lose his life and Bassanio and Portia marries and have a happy everlasting life.)

Tragedies Hamlet, King Lear, Macbeth, Othello, and Romeo and Juliet. Have sad endings (i.e. both Romeo and Juliet dies in the end.) Romeo Juliet – A sad play about Romeo and Juliet’s love

Histories Henry IV, V, VIII, Richard II and III Talks about the Kings’ lives Henry VIII – talks about Henry VIII and romance with Anne Bullen Henry VIII divorces with his first wife, Queen Catherine, and remarries Anne Bullen, Queen Elizabeth’s mother Unlike the true history, this play ends with celebrating Elizabeth’s birth. But in truth, Anne Bullen gets beheaded and Elizabeth was not welcomed by anyone.
