Performance Expectations At the end of this lesson, you will: Recognize some of the major landmarks in Washington, DC and be able to match the pictures to the names. Compare and contrast two of the landmarks by creating a Venn diagram with at least five facts about each landmark and three facts that they have in common. Demonstrate the mastery of the facts of one of the major landmarks through a poster presentation. The presentation will include at least two pictures and five facts about the landmark.

National Landmarks On the next few slides, you will see five of the most famous landmarks in Washington, DC. In order to learn more about each of these landmarks, you are to click on each one of them and read about it as well as follow the links to a tour. As you move through each tour, be sure to have your learning logs in front of you so that you can make some notes.

The White House The White House is the home of the President of the United States. The United States Capitol Building The United States Capitol building is the home of the United States Congress. This is where laws are made. Both the Senate and the House of Representatives are in this building. The Senate has 100 members and the House of Representatives has 435 members. The Washington Monument The Washington Monument was built to honor George Washington who was the first president of the United States. Its shape is called an “obelisk”. It stands 555 feet tall. You can take an elevator to the top or climb the 897 steps all the way up and down. The Jefferson Memorial The Jefferson Memorial is dedicated to Thomas Jefferson who was the third president of the United States. He also was one of the authors of the Declaration of Independence. The memorial sits on a body of water known as the Tidal Basin of the Potomac River. The Lincoln Memorial The Lincoln Memorial is dedicated to Abraham Lincoln who was the sixteenth president of the United States. The memorial has a large sculpture of Lincoln seated in a chair. Among the many items around the walls of the memorial are Lincoln’s Gettysburg address, given right here in Pennsylvania, and paintings of various events in Lincoln’s life. Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in Ford Theater in April of 1863.
