Presentation transcript:

Polyethylene terephthalate is commonly known as PET. It is a thermoplastic polymer belonging to the polyester family and is used in synthetic fibers. PET was made in 1941 by John Rex Whinfield, James Tennant Dickson and their employer the Calico Printers' Association of Manchester. SARVESH JOSHI 8-F, 27

History Two chemists named Rex Whinfield and James Dickson, working at a small English company with the quaint name of the "Calico Printer's Association" in Manchester, developed "polyethylene terephthalate" (PET or PETE) in It would be used for synthetic fibers in the postwar era, with names such as "polyester," "Dacron," and "Terylene." Sidhanth Verma VIII-F 30

Uses Of POLY ETHYLENE TEREPHTHALATE[PET] PET has good barrier properties against oxygen and carbon dioxide. Therefore, it is utilized in bottles for mineral water. Other applications include food trays for oven use, roasting bags, audio/video tapes as well as mechanical components, PET has good strength, ductility, stiffness and hardness. The amorphous PET has better ductility but less stiffness and hardness. PET is not only used for making magnetic tapes, but in audio and video cassette recorders also. Rishab Taneja VIII-F 25

ADVANTAGES OF POLY ETHYLENE TEREPHTHALATE[PET] PET offers several different advantages. PET can be found in many different forms, from semi-rigid to rigid. This is largely dependent upon its thickness. It is a lightweight plastic that can be made into a number of different products. It is very strong and has impact resistant properties as well. As far as color, it is largely colorless and transparent, although color can be added, depending upon the product that it is being used for. These advantages make PET one of the most common types of plastic that is found today. SALONI ARORA VIII F 26

ADVANTAGES OF POLY ETHYLENE TEREPHTHALATE[PET] PET can be easily recycled, with systems now able to recycle the product to produce new bottles using 100% of material coming from old bottles. PET is perfectly transparent, light, shock- resistant and can be produced in different colours. Shrutika VIII-F 28
