Rock Drill Lubrication

Introduction Lack of proper lubrication is the leading cause of premature wear or failure of rock drill components!

Questions? Where is the football style lubricator used? How does the lubricator work? Where should the lubricator be installed? Personal Protective Equipment for drilling? What is the proper way to blow out the air line? How do you regulate the flow of lubricant? What is the proper way to fill the lubricator? Is the machine getting enough lubricant? Rock drill oil vs. rock drill grease?

Applications Rock drills. Air tuggers in manways or shaft stations. Pneumatic ventilation fans. Pneumatic cylinders for vent doors. Pneumatic cylinders for control gates. Small pneumatic hoists in shops. Slushers with pneumatic motors. Any pneumatic powered hand tools.

How A Lubricator Works

Location of the Lubricator The lubricator should be placed a maximum of 12’ from the drill.

Location of the Lubricator VERTICAL WORKS BEST WHEN PLACED HORIZONTAL NO

Personal Protective Equipment Before proceeding with any drilling operation full personal protective equipment must be worn. This includes CSA approved: safety glasses, hard hat, gloves, double hearing protection (plugs/ muffs), steel toe boots.

Blowing The Air Line

Setting The Lubricator

Filling The Lubricator

Enough Lubricant?

Oil Vs. Grease Oil produces a mist of oil in the air around the drill. Grease does not produce a mist in the air around the drill.

Oil Vs. Grease Oil is washed out of the drill by excess water in the air. Grease is not washed out of the drill by water in the air.

Grease gets sticky in cold temperatures. Oil Vs. Grease Oil remains liquid in all temperatures. Grease gets sticky in cold temperatures.

Oil suspends in the air longer and reaches the drill faster. Oil Vs. Grease Oil suspends in the air longer and reaches the drill faster. Grease drops out of the air quickly and takes longer to reach the drill.

Oil Vs. Grease Drilling a drift round uses two full lubricators of oil. Drilling a drift round uses less than one full lubricator of grease.

Oil Vs. Grease If using oil check the lubricant at the beginning of the shift and again halfway through the shift. If using grease check the level of the lubricant at beginning of each shift.

Tips Always blow the air hose before connecting. Pour some lubricant into the hose at the drill. Store drills in upright position out of water. Connect air & water hose together in storage. Stuff a rag in the chuck to keep dirt out. Check to be sure drill steel collars are clean. Use one lubricator for each drill. Check during operation for proper lubrication Always wear all CSA approved safety gear. THE FOOT BALL TYPE LUBRICATOR REQUIRES VERY LITTLE MAINTENANCE. THE MECHANISM INSIDE THE LUBRICATOR IS VERY SIMPLE. THE ONLY PROBLEM THAT IS EXPERIENCED IS PLUGGING OF THE SMALL AIR PORTS IN THE REGULATING PIN. OCCASIONALLY THE OIL CHAMBER IN THE LUBRICATOR MAY BE FLUSHED WITH SOLVENT TO REMOVE ANY SLUDGE THAT MIGHT HAVE BUILT UP. THE SMALL AIR PORTS IN THE REGULATING PIN CAN USUALLY BE CLEANED WITH FINE STIFF WIRE. A SCHEMATIC OF PARTS A ND LIST OF REPLACEMENT PARTS TO REPAIR JOY LUBRICATORS IS AVAILABLE ON REQUEST
