Honeybees live in hives or colonies. A small hive contains about 20,000 bees, while some larger hives may have over 100,000 bees. Hives include one queen, hundreds of drones, and thousands of worker bees. ■ The worker bees are female, but they do not breed. ■ The queen bee is female and creates all the babies for the hive. ■ The drone bees are male and do not have stingers. Owning and operating a successful bee farm and honey-making business, August Boatwright is the family matriarch running the household with a firm but loving hand with her sisters, the fiercely independent music teacher June and the innocent childlike May. The Boatwright sisters’ lives are disrupted when fourteen year-old Lily Owens and her caretaker Rosaleen appear on their doorstep seeking refuge. After fleeing with Rosaleen to Tiburon, South Carolina, a place surrounded by mystery and a strong connection to Lily’s mother, they find shelter at the Boatwright household. Lily is immediately taken under the wing of August Boatwright as her new beekeeping apprentice. There she is given a comfortable place to explore and, for the first time in her life, just be. Photos © 2008 Fox Searchlight Pictures. Review © David Bruce

Lily also discovers joy in the simple pleasures of life through her deepening relationship with the Boatwright sisters and soon comes into her own, determined to enjoy the sweet nectar of life for the first time. As a budding young woman who has left the place she once called home, Lily unexpectedly finds her true home and a family she has always yearned for. Photos © 2008 Fox Searchlight Pictures. Surrounded by the unexpected comforts, grace and deep rooted spirituality Lily encounters, she soon forms a maternal bond with each of these women whose unique and special gifts help reconcile the loss of her mother. Through the strength and female empowerment that embodies the Boatwright sisters, Lily ultimately comes to the realization that sometimes you must leave home in order to find it. A SIMPLE YET PROFOUND MOVIE! A SIMPLE YET PROFOUND MOVIE! “Most people have no idea about the complicated life goin’ on inside a hive. Bees have a secret life we don’t know anything about.” –August So true! The hive is a metaphor for all that inner complicated stuff that we all live with. The message in the story is simple yet profound: To find “home” with people that truly love and care for you brings healing to your inner turmoil (as exemplified in Lily). But more, to provide that sense of belonging to others (as demonstrated by August) is the greatest service and act of love you can give. Review © David Bruce

Liftin’ someone’s heart, now that matters. The whole problem with people is they know what matters, but they don’t choose it. -August “I can’t think of something I’d rather have more then someone lovin’ me.” -Lily Photos © 2008 Fox Searchlight Pictures. Review © David Bruce
