Subjunctive with Ojalá & Verbs of Hope Here is what English does: Infinitive = express what you want somebody to do. Example: I want John to arrive.

Subjunctive with Ojalá & Verbs of Hope Present = express what you hope somebody does. Example: I hope John arrives.

Subjunctive with Ojalá & Verbs of Hope Conditional = what you wish someone would do. Example: I wish John would arrive.

Subjunctive with Ojalá & Verbs of Hope In Spanish you can express all three with the subjunctive. Quiero que John llegue. Espero que John llegue. Deseo que John llegue.

Subjunctive with Ojalá & Verbs of Hope After verbs of hope, use the subjunctive if there is a subject change. Verbs of hope: desear esperar querer

Subjunctive with Ojalá & Verbs of Hope Ella quiere que su hijo se comporte bien. Nosotros deseamos que ustedes reciclen. Espero que tú no seas orgulloso.

Subjunctive with Ojalá & Verbs of Hope Use the infinitive and omit “que” if there is no change of subject. El niño quiere comportarse bien. Los empleados quieren destacarse por su trabajo.

Subjunctive with Ojalá & Verbs of Hope Ojalá also expresses hope. It has only one form and cannot be conjugated. Ojalá can be used with or without “que”. But you MUST use the subjunctive with ojalá.
