Table Manners At A Dinner Party GOALS: 4 To get to know the western table manners. To learn some useful expressions about table manners. To compare Chinese table manners with western table manners.

6 2. How should we lay the table for a western dinner party? (What can you see on the table?) Beside your napkin you will find a small bread roll and three glasses; There are two pairs of knives and forks on the table, forks on the left and knives on the right of the plate; Two spoons, the big one is for the soup and the small one for the dessert. 1.Why is it important to know table manners in Western dinner party? What does having good table manners mean? Because knowing it can help you make a good impression. It means knowing: how to use knives and forks, when to drink a toast and how to behave at the table. Listening and Reading: Read the text carefully, try to find the answers:

7 3. What can you do when you sit down at the table? When you sit at the table, you can take your napkin, unfold it and put it on your lap. 4. For the starter/ After the starter, what should you do? For the starter, which you eat with the smaller pair, you keep the knives in your right hand and the fork in your left. After the starter, you will get a bowl of soup--- but only one bowl of soup and never ask for a second serving.

8 5. For main course, which part of the bird do many Westerners think to be the best? What can they do when eating chicken or other birds? 6. When you are at table,what should you do? Many Westerners think the chicken breast with its tender white flesh is the best part of the bird. They can use their fingers when they are eating chicken or other birds, but never touch beef or other meat on bones. You should try to speak quietly and smile a lot, but do not laugh all the time.
