Should EEG be routinely performed in the assessment of children with CP? Literature: Does not address the role of EEG predicting the development of seizures in a child with CP. Data from studies involving 1918 children have found on average that 43% (range 35 to 62%) of children with CP develop epilepsy

Data from one class II study compared patients with CP and epilepsy to those with epilepsy alone. 1 1.Children with CP had a higher incidence of epilepsy with onset within the first year of age (47% vs. 10%) 2.history of neonatal seizures (19% vs. 3%) 3.status epilepticus (16% vs. 1.7%) 4.need for polytherapy (25% vs. 3%) 5.treatment with second-line antiepileptic drugs (31% vs. 6.7%).

Factors associated with a seizure-free period of one year or more in epileptic children with CP –normal intelligence –single seizure type –Monotherapy –spastic diplegia Children with CP who have abnormal neuroimaging studies are more likely to have epilepsy Children with –spastic quadriplegia (50-94%) –or hemiplegia (30%) –have a higher incidence of epilepsy than patients with diplegia or ataxic CP (16-27%) –In patients with dyskinetic CP, it may occasionally be difficult to differentiate partial complex seizures from dyskinetic movements.
