in static electricity positive charges move!

We will start with a pith ball and charge it

A pith ball has an equal number of and

Here we show a sample of electrons and protons.

Charging by is the same as charging by

When you charge an object by conduction, the object acquires the same charge as the object that charges it.

So to charge the neutral pith ball net negative we must charge it with a negatively charged object.

We will first bring a negatively charged rod close to the pith ball.

As the rod gets closer to the pith ball, the electrons in the pith ball are repelled away from the electrons in the rod.

Notice that the side of the pith ball closest to the negatively charged rod is net positive!

The positive side of the pith ball is ATTRACTED to the negative rod.

When the pith ball makes with the rod,

are transferred from the rod into the positive side of the pith ball.

The pith ball gains and becomes net negative.

Hooray! We’ve successfully charged the pith ball

Let’s summarize the steps needed to charge a pith ball negative.

Equal number of electrons and protons brought close by. Electrons in the pith ball move away form the negative charges in the rod. Positive side of pith ball attracted to rod. Electrons are transferred from the rod into the pith ball making the pith ball… Pith ball repelled from negative rod.
