Improve relationship on all levels of 41/OT national associations and national Round Table associations Initial Workshop 41 International HYM 2012 Tampere Finland Engelbert Friedsam – IRO Old Tablers Germany

Why this workshop (1)? We all know: A solid continuous working relationship between 41/OT national associations and national RT associations ensures and drives close cooperation and understanding of each other on all organisational levels 41 International, national 41/OT, districts, Tables 41 International, national 41/OT, districts, Tables A healthy Round Table national organisation and clubs is the basis for a great 41/OT national and international future. A constant flow of RT- members leaving RT and joining 41/OT ensures future growth of the 41/OT national associations 10/11/20142 OT 41 International Workshop Working together between 41-OT and RT ppt

Why this workshop (2)? But… what we hear from discussions between us and what seems to be current reality: “We have not much contact with our national Round Table organisation … but some tables have good contact …“ „Only a small %age of leaving Round Tablers are joining our 41/OT organisation … many join Lions and Rotary, no interest in 41/OT because of lack of activity…“ „Round Table is not well in our country, so we cannot get enough 41/OT members … we cannot grow if we do not accept Non-Ex-Tablers …“ „Times have changed, people are to busy to join 41/OT…“ Looks like this or similar discussions are going on for years now in most associations … 10/11/20143 OT 41 International Workshop Working together between 41-OT and RT ppt

Sharing current situation – Association by Association (1) What is the target outcome of this workshop? Start sharing the issues we have in the different associations… next HYM follow-up workshop? Identify common issues and pick ideas for yourself how to potentially approach them when you go home… Learn from each other to improve… what has worked, what did not… Gives the opportunity to share issues / findings and ideas in your home organisations and work on plans for improvement Let’s start to focus on this key actions to improve our organisation! 10/11/20144 OT 41 International Workshop Working together between 41-OT and RT ppt

Sharing current situation – Association by Association (2) Some rules for the discussion in this workshop: Please put your view about the situation in your association forward in an open/honest way… there is no reason to hide, as we all are facing similar problems… The situation is different in each association. Some of you have done already something, others maybe not. Explain steps you plan to take / already have taken up to now… what has worked… what did not work to improve… Why did it work why did it not work? Limited reporting time per association: 8-10min max. please! Nobody is wrong! There is no “one right answer”! We need to talk / listen to each other and share! Nobody is wrong! There is no “one right answer”! We need to talk / listen to each other and share! 10/11/20145 OT 41 International Workshop Working together between 41-OT and RT ppt

Your situation… Please speak at least about these topics: 1.What is your relationship with Round Table in your association? – Short statement on your bonding and what onboarding percentage of leaving Round Tablers do you have?? association? – Short statement on your bonding and what onboarding percentage of leaving Round Tablers do you have?? 2. When have you met Round Table last time? How many times do you meet per year on national level, many times do you meet per year on national level, district / area level, with what results? district / area level, with what results? Do you visit RT business meetings at Table level? Does RT visit Do you visit RT business meetings at Table level? Does RT visit your 41/OT business meetings at table level? your 41/OT business meetings at table level? 3. Do you know what your RT organisation thinks of your 41/OT organisation? If yes, what do they say? your 41/OT organisation? If yes, what do they say? 4. How can you improve “attractiveness” of your 41/OT association, so that there is motivation to join 41/OT association, so that there is motivation to join 41/OT locally and on national level? locally and on national level? 10/11/20146 OT 41 International Workshop Working together between 41-OT and RT ppt

Sharing current situation – Old Tablers Germany (1) Situation 2007: About 3000 members… About 20% leaving Round About 3000 members… About 20% leaving Round Tablers joining OT… so growing… Tablers joining OT… so growing… Joint RTD / OTD board meeting, challenged by RTD Joint RTD / OTD board meeting, challenged by RTD with comments like: with comments like: „Why should leaving Round Tablers join you…? you are „Why should leaving Round Tablers join you…? you are not attractive to leaving Round Tablers…“ not attractive to leaving Round Tablers…“ „You are not active enough, just wining and dining…“ „You are not active enough, just wining and dining…“ „You are not actively supporting service projects…” „You are not actively supporting service projects…” “You do not know your Round Tablers… you are not “You do not know your Round Tablers… you are not working side-by-side with us…” working side-by-side with us…” “You are not “sexy” enough!!” “You are not “sexy” enough!!” This has been a “wake-up“ session for OTD! 10/11/20147 OT 41 International Workshop Working together between 41-OT and RT ppt

Sharing current situation – Old Tablers Germany (2) Situation after 2007 Meeting / 2008: RTD board and OTD board including the district / area chairmen started to meet twice a year to build relationship and identify actions to improve the situation At the 2008 OTD AGM: Several Old Tables were seeking to introduce service activities into the Old Tablers community, introducing the idea to support the former national RT Service Project “School of Hope” in Kenya, as it still needed funds to finish the project… Let’s do service projects on local joint table basis!! This would drive activity and joint work with RT on all levels in the organisation… would make us more attractive for Round Tablers to join Old Tablers… 10/11/20148 OT 41 International Workshop Working together between 41-OT and RT ppt

Sharing current situation – Old Tablers Germany (3) Situation 2008 at the OTD AGM: Result: Big concerns / resistance against service from many Old Tablers on one side… “we are a club of friends, not a service club… we have not done service for 30 years, we do not want to change… But also: big support from many Old Tablers to get more active and carry on similar how they did at Round Table days… Fundamental discussions went on for 18 months… 10/11/20149 OT 41 International Workshop Working together between 41-OT and RT ppt

Sharing current situation – Old Tablers Germany (4) Situation 2008 / 2009 / 2010: The Old Tables promoting the School of Hope Project carried on motivating the German Old Tables to raise funds… and many did: 145 Old Tables out of 220 raised funds for the project! OTD was providing the communication platform to promote the service project, but did not own the project! It was owned by the Old Table Club 74 Hanau. The Outcome: Great success, many clubs started to work together between RT and OT and had a great positive experience. Doing service is not an issue anymore for many clubs! Compromise achieved: Everybody CAN do, but there is no MUST! No discussions anymore if we do service or not! 10/11/ OT 41 International Workshop Working together between 41-OT and RT ppt

Sharing current situation – Old Tablers Germany (5) Situation 2012: Nothing is perfect.
