Curriculum Overview Putting the Puzzle Pieces Together

Planners and Homework Please have planners signed nightly. Students are responsible for classwork not finished in class. Homework is sent home on a specific day assigned to your child and is due the following week. Students need to complete a reading log in the planner nightly. (More to come…) SOAR students complete 1 reading log not 2.

Reading with Your Child One size does not fit all Find a “just right” book for your child. What is the big picture? What is the purpose of reading with your child? Reading should not be frustrating for either of you.

The 7 Thinking Strategies Schema- what you already know Questioning- needs to know/nice to know shallow vs. deep questioning Sensory Images- using all your senses to picture what is happening in your mind Determining Importance- What is the most important idea to remember? Inferring- Using your schema plus text clues to come up with a new idea Synthesizing- How you change as a person from what you read or understand Monitoring for Comprehension- The strategies used to repair reading difficulty.

Reading Students will be assessed in reading at the end of the trimester. Students are placed into reading groups based on their individual needs. Reading groups are fluid and allow for children to move based on growth and needs. Students are expected to make a shift in their learning from a focus of learning how to read to a focus of reading to learn. Students are expected to become better thinkers in regards to text content.

Writing A baseline writing sample will be collected from every child and scored on the Measure of Student Progress (MSP) rubric. 4 points will be given for content, organization, and style (cos) and 2 points are given to conventions (con). Students are taught the writing process as well as six traits of writing. The writing process is prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Six traits of writing are; ideas, content, organization, voice, style and conventions. Writing lessons can be whole group, small group or individual based on need.

Math The district is making a shift away from a commercial based curriculum program to teachers examining and planning lessons to fit with the standards and student need. Student focus is on a deeper conceptual understanding versus only memorization. Real world math, done regularly with you, helps to build their math concepts. Math workshop, which utilizes manipulatives, allows for task differentiation.

Standards Example Math Standard 3.2.A states: Represents multiplication as repeated addition, arrays, counting by multiples, and equal jumps on a number line, and can connect each representation to the related equation. The next slide will show an example of all of the parts to this one standard.

Putting the standard to work! Example: Mr. Fernandez has 3 Starbuck’s drinks each day for 5 days. This is an array that shows 3x5=15 Repeat addition: =15Counting by multiples: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, … Number line jumps shows =15 or 3x5=15

Science FOSS is the district adopted science program. This science curriculum is inquiry based. In third grade our earth science is water. Our life science is the human body. We will study life cycles (inherited characteristics of plants and animals) throughout the year.

Social Studies The children are to study cultures and communities. The district has provided a new social studies curriculum this year which will be integrated with reading and writing. Students are required to learn about two different cultures and to be able to compare and contrast using graphic organizers.

Assessments The baseline writing sample is a building assessment given in the fall. Third graders will be given the MSP for reading and math. End of the year assessments will be given at the building level for reading, writing, and math. Students will be assessed using the CRA in reading for fall and end of year.

Student Led Conferences Parents, Teachers, and Students will work together at Columbia Valley to create a three- way partnership. Students will set goals and reflect on their learning. Students will share their baseline data and progress made towards achieving their goal. Conference Sign ups are available in your teacher’s room.

Volunteers All chaperones and classroom volunteers must have a completed background check to work in rooms and go on field trips. See Lynda in the front office for background check paper work. We are planning a field trip to see a play.
