The Health Workforce Research Center Program: Objective To increase the amount of high quality, impartial, policy-relevant research on the health workforce and to assist decision-makers at the federal, state and local levels to better understand health workforce needs to ensure access to high quality, efficient health care. 2

The Health Workforce Research Center Program: Overview Brief Description: Recipients of cooperative agreements will establish Health Workforce Research Centers (HWRC) which conduct and disseminate analysis of the health workforce on issues of national significance with a specific area of research concentration. Type of Award: Cooperative agreement Number of Awards: Up to four (4) HWRCs will be awarded Individual Award Amount: Individual award amount of between $300,000 and $500,000 per fiscal year Project Period: Four years 3

HWRC Eligibility Applicants may be a State, a State workforce investment board, a public health or health profession school, an academic health center, or a public or private nonprofit entity that has experience in analyzing health workforce data and policy issues on a regional or national scale. Faith-based and community-based organizations, Tribes, and tribal organizations are eligible to apply for these funds. 4

Applicant Experience and Expertise The Principal Investigator (PI), Deputy PI, and core research staff must have substantive experience in conducting and disseminating policy-relevant health workforce research. This experience must be demonstrated by a minimum of at least five relevant peer-reviewed publications. This experience is both an eligibility requirement and a review criterion for this opportunity and will play a role in funding decisions. 5

Most Commonly Asked Questions (1) Appropriate attachment for staffing: Attachment 2 (not Attachment 1). Project Abstract information on Page 17: participants must provide an overall HWRC abstract that covers the bulleted requirements; detailed descriptions of individual projects should be provided in accordance with the requirements in the “Work Plan” section. Overall program abstracts may be one OR two pages. Multiple applications: an organization can submit multiple applications, but will only be funded for a maximum of two awards (one research, one TA). 8

Most Commonly Asked Questions (2) Overall vs. individual project methodology: the “Methodology” section of the application should provide the HWRC’s general approach and expertise; individual projects should include specific methodological details as necessary. Definition of “flexible use”: Topic areas may include novel health care roles, team-based care (including the composition of teams and division of responsibilities across a team), professionals working at the top of their competencies, etc. 9
