Human input channels Vision10 9 bit/sec Somesthetic Taste10 0 bit/sec Smell10 1 bit/sec Touch10 3 bit/sec Hearing10 6 bit/sec (approx.)

The “IST-05 view”

Input >>Output DISPLAY up to 10 9 bytes/sec about 10 2 bytes/sec n interactive video was seen as optimal n More immediate

HISTORY IST-05 [et sequelae TG-002 & IST-013] dealt with Visualization in massive datasets Commissioned this Workshop To give guidance for next TG To address real problems

History The Brussels meeting [November, 1994] Highlighted an artisan state And hankered for an engineering state IST-05 and its other incarnations were successful They have stayed with developments in visualization

History The Brussels meeting [November, 1994] Highlighted an artisan state And hankered for an engineering state IST-05 and its other incarnations were successful They have stayed with developments in visualization Indeed we have always stayed ahead of the “Art” But… !

Friends, the outlook is pretty bleak; the climate is changing; the mammals are taking over; there is a meteor shower on the way; and we’ve all got a brain the size of a walnut... After “The Far Side” with apologies to Larson

The Present Technology is changing rapidly Users’ [humans’] expectations of techniques are also changing rapidly And we’ve all got brains the size of a coconut…

The Challenge We study the present to forecast developments. We want to stay one revolution [or more] ahead of visualization usage I see this Workshop as helping us to do this by suggesting ways ahead for the art & science

This Workshop Goals Problems and discussants Format Processes Report

Goals Discussion of problems Where visualization will help Involving massive datasets Multimedia Practical discussion Real problems Understand common and underlying principles Groups of problems … or the whole set See the next paradigm

Problems and discussants Intended to be a practical examination of real military problems Call for problems Discussants invited

Workshop Format Problems ganged into loose sets Discussions of problems Discussions of problem ‘gangs’ panel Discussion recorders More later

Workshop processes Present your problem Lead the discussion Participate in Panel at end of your ‘gang’

Session Recorders Gist discussions Single problems and ‘gangs’ Use the forms if you want Computer or hardcopy Participate in discussions, nevertheless!

Report Discussion gist Your text [if any] Your slides Gang-discussions Appreciation Forms major contribution to the HAT report Human Applications & Technologies

Can we engineer? Tools and techniques are speedy Can get a new display almost as you describe it. Finished, ‘commercial’ Ergo engineering--if it exists--will not be simple parametric study What, then?
