What is the National Quality Board’s role in developing the new MRSA Objective? It was set up to provide external scientific, clinical, operational and practical advice to the Department of Health on the development of the MRSA Objective providing a 'sounding board' for objective ideas, and to provide insight as to how they might be received and implemented in practice to feedback to the Department of Health potential issues of concern surrounding the MRSA objective to consider central or local data needs arising from the development of the MRSA objective to advise on how the objective and its impact can best be communicated to non-expert audiences provide guidance on the key questions in the Stakeholder engagement exercise

What the MRSA Objective will cover The MRSA objective will cover the numbers of MRSA bloodstream infections in NHS organisations in England. It will be a national definition and will be applied locally, at least to acute NHS trusts The objective will not cover other infections, such as MSSA (Meticillin Sensitive Staphylococcus aureus) or C. difficile. It will not cover MRSA infections other than bloodstream infections

Since April 2009, NHS organisations have been legally required to register with the Care Quality Commission under the Health and Social Care Act As a legal requirement of their registration they must protect patients, workers and others who may be at risk of acquiring a healthcare associated infection. Further requirements will apply from 2010/11 for services currently registered under the Care Standards Act 2000, to include private and voluntary healthcare and social care services. The early introduction of the requirement related to healthcare associated infections reflects the high priority and commitment to reducing infections associated with NHS healthcare.
