They tell me that I'm a BIM Coordinator. How did that happen and what does it mean? Brett C. Gatti Design Technology Leader

Do these words look familiar?

The position goes by many names… BIM Manager BIM Captain BIM Technologist BIM Facilitator CAD Coordinator CAD Administrator Coordination Manager Collaboration Specialist VDC Modeler VDC Administrator VDC Manager IPD Collaborator IPD Facilitator BIM Coordinator BIM Administrator BIM Specialist Building Information Modeler CAD Manager Project Coordinator Collaboration Manager Digital Designer VDC Specialist VDC Coordinator VDC Facilitator IPD Collaboration Manager

How/Where did you start you BIM journey? A few quick questions: Who started off with the career goal of BIM Coordinator? Did anyone go to school with BIM Coordination as their area of study? How many started out as… –an Architect? –an Engineer? –an IT Support person? –a CAD Draftsperson? –a CAD Modeler? –a position completely unrelated to BIM or CAD? Engineer Architect IT Support Draftsperson Modeler ???? BIM Coordinator

How did you end up as a BIM Coordinator? The position found you or others identified you for it –You were volunteered/drafted by others (your manager, and/or your “friends”) –You are the only one in the office with Navisworks experience –You excel at problem solving and were the logical choice for the role –You have a working knowledge of all of the required software packages –You never say no to a challenge – and everyone knows it You identified the position as a good fit for your skills –You wanted the position and set a goal to be “the chosen one” –Your BIM knowledge and work ethic is a perfect fit –You expanded your software knowledge in order to better fit the positions requirements

Common Duties of a BIM Coordinator Generic Duties Exporting data for use in other software packages Creating and Naming Export Views (2D and 3D) within Revit Creating Export Sets in the Revit model Exporting to Navisworks format for use in coordination reviews Exporting to DWG format when CAD backgrounds are needed –Hint: Create and Save export settings for consistent output You are the communication “bridge” between the different project participants With You Without You

BIM Coordination on an “internal only” project Exporting to Navisworks Format Performing Navisworks Clash Detection/Model Coordination via Clash Detective Exporting to DWG format for use as CAD backgrounds Lead internal Coordination Meetings to review identified issues Publish and/or post the “Clashed” Navisworks file for review by team Common Duties of a BIM Coordinator

Possible BIM Coordinator duties on a “multi-party/multi-firm” project when your organization is performing the overall project BIM Coordination Exporting your organization’s Revit data to Navisworks Format Performing Navisworks Clash Detection/Model Coordination Lead Project Coordination Meetings to review identified issues Publish and/or post the “Clashed” Navisworks file for review by team

Common Duties of a BIM Coordinator Possible BIM Coordinator duties on a “multi-party/multi-firm” project when someone else on the team is performing the overall project BIM Coordination Exporting your organization’s Revit data to Navisworks Format Exporting data from the Revit models – all required formats - for use in Coordination Meetings and as background files Post your exported files (on schedule) via the agreed upon method Review the findings of the Coordination Review Translate…. Post Data…. Review….

Developing Best Practices Creating a BIM Coordination Checklist What topics should the Checklist cover? Software Questions –Who’s in Revit? What Version? Overall Project Coordination Questions –Contact info for project partners File transfer method –How and when to share project data Does the Project require Navisworks? –If so, who is doing the “Clashing”? Do team members require other Export Formats? –What other formats are required?

Archiving Revit/BIM Projects at key milestones Some typical scenarios that might result in the need to archive your Revit project before completion: The owner has decided that the design needs to go a different direction and you wish to retain a Record Copy of the project “before change” A change in Project Scope Moving between project phases A Design Option has been selected You want to create a “point in time” snapshot – just in case

Archiving Methods PDF DWF/DWFx DWG Manual Copy of all files related to the Revit model eTransmit for Revit

Navisworks Clash Detective & Switchback Clash Detective Combine/Append the necessary exported data into one Navisworks file Create and save “Clash Tests” Run “Clash Tests” Visually review the results Save/Publish the “clashed” file and generate a report for use by others

Navisworks Clash Detective & Switchback Hint: Revit and Navisworks Manage must be opened on the same computer Navisworks Switchback Open the “clashed” NWD file - from the Coordination Review Open the Revit model that was used to create the Navisworks exports (Local or Central) In Navisworks, choose a “clash” to review and select one of the clashing items “Switchback” changes focus to the Revit model
