Dublin City Schools AP/IB Meeting Advanced Placement Hello and welcome to the 2012 Dublin City Schools Advanced Placement & International Baccalaureate Presentation My name is Bryan Stork. I am the Enrichment Specialist at Dublin Coffman. I am joined by my colleagues; Karen Kendall-Sperry, Dublin Jerome & Holly Hall, Dublin Scioto January 18th, 2012

This Evening’s Presentation Courses Benefits Advanced Placement Components International Baccalaureate Comparison and Conclusion Tonight will be a brief, but informative, look into two great pre-university programs. The College Board Advanced Placement and the International Baccalaureate Diploma program. First we will talk about the AP, courses and benefits Then look at he IB Components and benefits We will conclude with a comparison of the two programs.

Advanced Placement Program® Designed to be equivalent to general introductory college courses with respect to: Range and depth of topics Textbooks Lab work Time and effort required by students AP designed to parallel introductory college course Mirror pace, range and depth Use college textbooks.

AP® Examinations Administered in May Approximately three hours long Composed of multiple-choice and free-response questions Free-response questions graded by college professors and AP teachers in June AP Examination grades range from 1 to 5 Two week examination period in May: 2003 — May 5-9 & May 12-16 A detailed testing schedule for 2003 is available on the back page of the AP Program Guide, 2002-2003. Go to http://www.collegeboard.com/ap/students for more information. The AP Examination schedule rotates from year to year. AP Examination schedules are set up to prevent the overwhelming majority of students from taking two tests on the same day. AP Examinations are generally three hours in length. However, semester courses in the social sciences have shorter examinations, and the AP Calculus Examination is 3 hours and 15 minutes long. All AP Examinations are composed of a multiple-choice and free-response section except the AP Studio Art Examination. Free-response questions are graded by readers who have been rigorously trained to use the grading rubrics developed by the examination, question, and table leaders. These rubrics along with constant back-reading of free-response answers provide a high degree of reliability.

Why Take AP? Advanced Placement Program® (AP®) courses give you a head start on college. - Broaden a student’s intellectual horizons. Stand out in college admissions process. Earn college credit and placement into advanced courses.

Benefits of taking the AP Exam Many of the nation’s colleges and universities grant students admission, credit, and/or placement for qualifying AP Exam grades. For example, at some colleges, students can use qualifying AP Exam grades of 3 or higher to: Graduate in under 4 years Enter upper-level courses Fulfill a foreign language requirement

Dublin AP Participation (Exams) 776 AP Exams given (May 2005) 1792 AP Exams given (May 2008) 2187 AP Exams given (May 2009) 2241 AP Exams given (May 2010) Note: Check with individual buildings for AP course offerings.

Summary Comparisons Advanced Placement

The Students AP promotes open access to students who excel in select academic disciplines. IB promotes open access to students who are motivated to pursue a well-rounded education and a high level of performance in all six disciplines: English, World Language, Sciences, Math, Individuals and Societies, and the Arts/Electives. Car comparisons

Student Connections AP students may form peer groups within individual classes or disciplines, but this is not a goal of the program. IB seeks to create a cohort or peer group around academics. IB Science students work together between science disciplines to create a group research project.

The Exams AP exams are multiple-choice and short-answer or essay exams. IB has multi-faceted internal and external assessments that allow students to demonstrate what they know.

The Exams (continued) Any student may take AP exams. Students must be enrolled in IB courses in order to take IB exams because the assessments are embedded in the coursework. IB is not exclusive, due to the IA and EA

The Scores AP scores are based solely on the AP exam performance. The score is on a scaling of 1 to 5. IB scores are based on classroom work done over time (Internal Assessments) and on IB (External) exams. The score is on a scaling of 1 to 7.
