The longest river in Italy is the Po. Its headwaters are on the slopes of Mount Viso in the Cottian Alps, near the French border. From the source of Italy's largest river it travels across the northern part of Italy. The river flows 405 miles (652 kilometres) to empty into the Adriatic Sea on the east coast of Italy.

The River Po is Italy's longest river and begins in the slopes of Mount Viso in the Cottain Alps. At 405 miles (652 kilometres) long and 1,650 feet (503 meters) across at its widest point it, it’s a rivulet compared to the Nile and Yangtze. 141 tributaries flow into the river.

In 2002, the city of Milano had no sewage treatment plant. The sewage went through channels directly into the Po. On February 24 th 2010, an oil spill that made its way into a tributary in northern Italy reached the River Po.
