Group Exercise – Part One With your partner, in the time allotted, share your overarching causes of conflicts chart. If they have things you like, be sure to change your chart accordingly

Step 1 – Deciding on a topic for your paper Think back to the two exercises we have done in our 6 person groups: Identifying commonalities between the three conflicts Identifying factors in conflicts between societies and applying them to the three 20th Century conflicts Use them to help you choose what to write about – what do you think is the most significant cause of conflict among societies. Make sure to pick something well connected to all three conflicts.

Step 2 – Identifying Support Think of all the ways that the factor you have chosen might be connected to the causes of World War I, World War II, and the Cold War Look over your notes from your text reading, your notes from student teaching , your preparation for the seminar, and your overarching causes of conflicts chart Talk with the people in your six person group For each conflict choose the way that illustrates the factor the best

Step 3 – Writing Your Thesis Remember our definition: A “thesis” is a statement of what your essay will prove. In a persuasive essay it is a statement of your position on an issue and the reasoning that supports your position.

Step 3 – Writing Your Thesis Imagine the assignment had been to write about the most significant cause of imperialism; here’s what a good thesis statement might look like: “As demonstrated by the Spanish looting of their colonies, the British profiteering in India, and the vast fortune received by Belgian King Leopold from the Congo, the most significant cause of imperialism was greed.” (support first and position second)

Step 3 – Writing Your Thesis Another way to write a similar thesis could be: “The most significant cause of imperialism was greed, as was demonstrated by the Spanish looting of their colonies, the British profiteering in India, and the vast fortune received by Belgian King Leopold from the Congo.” (position first and support second)

Finishing Step 3 Write your thesis in the appropriate spot on the handout As demonstrated by___ in World War I, ___ in World War II, and ___ in the Cold War, the primary cause of conflicts in the 20th century was____. The most significant cause of conflict in the 20th century was________as demonstrated in _____WWI,________WWII and _______in the Cold War.

Step 4 – Writing Topic Sentences Your first three body paragraphs contain the support for your thesis. Here they must show how the factor you chose was the primary cause of World War I, World War II, and the Cold War. Each paragraph should start with a strong statement of the claim the paragraph is making (the topic sentence). Here’s an example based on the sample thesis: “The greed of Spanish imperialist was shown by the way they looted their colonies economically.” “Aggression that caused WWII is displayed through Germany’s aggressive geographic take over of Europe.”

Finishing Step 4 Write a topic sentence for each of the first three body paragraphs of your paper in the appropriate spots on the handout. Follow the model: Sentence one: state how the factor was a significant cause of WWI Sentence two: state how the factor was a significant cause of WWII Sentence three: state how the factor was a significant cause of the CW

Step 6 - Deciding on your antithesis Think of other factors that played a role in causing any of the 3 conflict. Pick one you understand fully. Make sure you can explain why it is less significant than the factor you chose. Write it in the appropriate spot on the handout If you are writing a cause and effect essay please cross this section out.

Step 7 - Determining your rebuttal Decide why the factor you chose for your antithesis was not as important a cause of the three conflicts as the one you chose for your thesis Briefly state why in the appropriate spot on the handout
