M AINE I NTEGRATED Y OUTH H EALTH S URVEY (MIYHS) HEIGHT AND WEIGHT TRAINING MODULE 2010/2011 SCHOOL SURVEY

INTRODUCTION This training module is designed as a refresher course for school nurses to conduct accurate height and weight measurements of students participating in the Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey in 2010/2011 school year. Your school has been chosen to participate this year. This course is required to be completed by every school nurse who will be conducting this valuable screening. Aggregate data gathered from this screening will be used as a longitudinal measure of overall student risk of obesity and will inform local, regional and state stakeholders of the overall health of school-age children and may inform the effectiveness of systemic interventions aimed at reducing the obesity burden of school-age children in Maine.

MIYHS H EIGHT AND W EIGHT T RAINING Definitions: Height Weight Body Mass Index – not needed to calibrate for this survey Calculating BMI All Students in Grades: Kindergarten Grade Three Grade Five

Permissions must be sent home and parents have the right to opt out of their child participating in this survey and screening. Maintain student confidentiality during screening. Do not screen or record height and weight information for students whose parents have refused to participate in this survey. Record results in two columns FT and IN and pounds (rounded) on the forms provided. Height and weight screening done in the fall of 2010/2011 may be used if this protocol was followed.
