Improving Hepatitis B Testing and Linkage to care in San Diego County Binh Tran, PharmD, MBA Asian Pacific Health Foundation May 22, 2014

Asian Pacific Health Foundation Previously Asian Pacific Health Center providing low cost medical care for API since California Endowment Grant ( ) on Hepatitis B prevention APHF Foundation since 2008 to provide health education and health services, focusing on Hepatitis B Collaboration with UCSD on CDC grant to improve Hepatitis B Testing and Linkage to care.

Activities of APHF Hold screening events at community centers, churches, temples, Testing for HBsAg (infectivity) anti-HBcore (exposure) and anti-HBs (immunity) Results from Quest Diagnostics Labs are sent to UCSD which enters into RED Cap program.

Hepatitis B screening Results 2003 to 2010: 2884 persons (384 per year) screened, with 6.8% positive rate to persons (411 per year) screened at 25 community events with a 5.48% rate.

Graph 2: Number of persons screened for Hep B per year.

Collaboration with UCSD CDC grant 1 st year (Oct 2012 – Sept 2013) Category A: Early Identification and Linkage to Care for Foreign-born Persons with Hepatitis B. Total of 1071 persons screened with a 7.7% positive rate. MMWR report in May 2014

Linkage to care Through UCSD HealthCare Systems Case manager looks for agencies that have assistance programs for the positive tested patients

Objective #1: Increasing Education and Awareness UCSD School of Pharmacy Students participated in Barriers Study: Sandy Chong since 2011 CDC In 2013: Thuy Nguyen, Lillian Nguyen, Xuan Phan on demographics of persons screened for Hepatitis B, Point of Care tests for Hep B and C at clinical sites vs. community settings. CDC 2 nd year extension was approved.

Objective #2: Continue collecting surveys to better understand API behavior, and connect to hepatitis B. The goal here is to better understand barriers involved in screening and treatment and how to mitigate them so that more high-risked individuals can be helped.

Objective #3 By including other screenings at our events, the turnout rate for hepatitis B screening increases substantially. We collaborate with UCSD School of Pharmacy and UCSD School of Medicine to provide free screenings for diabetes, glaucoma, cholesterol and hypertension concurrently with hepatitis B screening.
